Free Crochet Pattern: Pumpkin Hat

When I started this blog I had meant for it to mostly be a place to post my crochet patterns, I have since strayed away from that idea and expanded to all my crafts and some of my life. Here is a pattern I created last Halloween for my daughter. She was 9 months old at the time, the hat fit her nicely and since this pattern is made so that the hat is strechy it fits her again this October when she is 21 months old.

Pumpkin Hat

Size 12months- stretches to 3t

What you'll need:
Orange yarn of your choice (I used Lily n Cream Hot Orange) about 2.5oz
                           Small amount of brown yarn
                           Small amount of green yarn
                           Hook H 5.00mm

Starting with Orange
ch. 25
row 1. DC in second chain from hook, DC across, ch 2, turn
row 2. DC in BLO across, ch 2, turn
row 3-24 repeat row 2

Now you should have a rectangle of orange. Put short ends together and crochet them together to make a tube of the Orange yarn, Fasten off and weave in ends.

Now pick one edge of the tube to be the top of the hat this will be the stem. Starting anywhere on the edge with the brown yarn

ch 2 (this counts as first DC) connecting the brown to the orange edge.
row 1. DC around sl st to the the first DC
row 2. Ch 2, DC around sl st to the first DC in row 2.
fasten off, weave in ends.

Ok this is what you should have so far:

Now you need to thread your yarn needle with some brown yarn and gather the brown part of that hat like this:

You need to hold it like this with one hand as you sew in and out of row 1 of the brown until its secured and now has a hat shape.

Leaf:
Using Green yarn
Ch 6
row 1. sc in second chain from hook, sc across, ch 1
row 2. sc  across the bottom of the first row, continuing to sc around until you get to the begining of row 2.

fasten off, sew onto the hat on any side of the "stem"

And you are done!

Birthday!

Yesterday was my birthday, I turned 24 but feel much older. I wonder what other 24 year olds do on their birthday? Mine was low key just how I like it. I went to the park with my little girl.

It was a really nice day out, a little windy but there was lots of sunshine.
Julie got me some presents while we were there
Love this face she makes when she smells flowers
Last year I took her to this same park on my birthday and I put her under a tree and took her picture. My whole family loved the picture so much I decided to do the same thing one year later in the same spot. So here is last years picture:
And one year later:
We had some cake
more cake

It was a great day.

Well thats what I have worked on lately. I have a few other small things because I'm working on getting stuff ready to sell at my first craft show next month. I will definitely post pics of how that goes.

Have a great day!

Writing Challenge Day 4. Views on religion

I am an atheist. Many times I have been told by friends that I am a "bad atheist". I disagree. Some people think atheists are full of hate and intolerance but with most thats not the case. I accept all religions and beliefs, I think its awesome that there are so many out there from all different kinds of people. I respect everyones beliefs and to me there is no reason I have to agree with someones religion to be their friend or even wife. ( my husband is catholic and my BFF is also Christian of some sort)  What also sometimes confuses people is that atheists DO have beliefs, they believe non belief.... confusing? yeah but what I mean is that I have strong beliefs that God doesn't exist.

I am not someone who has a bad experience with religion and is rebelling. I have actually had great experiences in church and church related functions. I have found that when you go to church you will find the same people you find in the grocery store. Young people, old people, nice, rude, sweet, negative, frustrating, pleasant, and so on. Not everyone is there for the same purpose, you might be shopping for milk when I am looking for cookies. Same with church, some are there to hear the word of God, be uplifted, some are there for social purposes, gossip, or for appearances.

Why have I been called a "bad atheist"? Because I refer to God a lot, but that doesn't mean I am accepting he is real I usually just use him as an example during conversation.  Ok so thats not enough reason to call me a bad atheist? I go to church. Not every Sunday, but I actually enjoy it. I go for a few reasons, 1. I like to sing and in public so where else is a bad singer to go? 2. I like wearing dresses for a reason 3. The stories in the bible usually teach good lessons and it helps me be a better person. This confuses some people and most people don't know I am a non believer simply because I don't want to break my dear grandmother-in-laws heart if she only knew her precious grandson was married to such a.... you get the point. I don't talk religion with anyone except people I know won't impose their beliefs on me because I do not do that to others.

So those are my terribly lengthy views on religion. I hope everyone enjoyed their Sunday.

Views on drugs and alcohol

This is a topic I have very strong feelings about. Due to a crazy weekend that resulted in me writing this blog post a day late I'm going to keep it quick and honest. My overall belief is that you shouldn't harm your body purposefully but does that mean I'm going to stop eating cake? no.

Drugs- I feel this category is to wide to give one feeling about all. I don't do drugs. I have done drugs. I grew up in a drug filled home. I choose not to do drugs because I want to set a good example for my daughter. If you do drugs thats okay with me as long as its not around my daughter and you don't put others lives in danger. The problem is most people don't realize when their actions put others in danger.

Alcohol- I don't like drunk people. I was once a person who would get drunk and I don't anymore. Will I occasionally enjoy some wine? yes. I like the way it tastes. However I know my body and I know that one glass of wine every few months doesn't affect me negatively.

I have had many experiences in my life that have dealt with both extremes, alcoholics and hard drug addicts and it has been in my life since before I left my mothers womb. This doesn't make me an expert but I feel like I have many perspectives, the child, sister, girlfriend, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and user. I have never been scared for my life when around people under the influence of drugs, I have more times than I can count with people under the influence of alcohol. I have had more  friends and family members die of alcohol related deaths than all other drugs combined, and zero die from anything marijuana related. I am not someone that feels marijuana should be legal but I do think that law makers should take a serious look at the statistics and consider why they continue to allow one person to die in an alcohol related car crash every 50 minutes. If you want to see your states alcohol related death statistics go here.

Well those are my thoughts.

Where I'd like to be in 10 years

This is not something I think about a lot. I usually take one day at a time, I don't even like to make plans a week in advance because things often don't work out they way I plan.

I guess I will start by the things I know about ten years from now. I will have an 11 year old daughter, this scares me. My husband will have a degree or two and be flying planes on his days off. I will be back to work doing I don't know what. I plan to go back to school when my husband finishes his school (he starts on Tuesday :))

There are some things I hope for in the future but its really up to God, Karma, Fate, (insert belief). I want another child. Boy, girl, twins, it doesn't matter I just know I want to have another child. Whether that happens or not I want to adopt as well but thats probably going to happen past ten years from now.

I hope we will be living somewhere else, I don't mean out of this house, I mean out of this state. I love Ohio but I have had enough. I want to be surrounded by different people (not saying anything negative about the people here, just want new experiences)

In ten years I will have a chunk of money saved for Julie for when she graduates High School. If college is her next step then I will help pay for it. If she has other plans in mind I will support that equally. I'm excited for the next ten years to see who my daughter becomes, what she likes, what she hates.

Thats all I have thought about the subject of next ten years. More than I expected to be able to write on the topic.

Happy Friday everyone!

Married Young

I am doing a writing challenge and this is day 1. Your current relationship, if single discuss how single life is.

We got married almost two years ago when I was 22 and super pregnant. We eloped. I don't regret eloping, it was convenient, we both wanted it to be private and wanted it right that moment. I never expected to be married at 22 and actually I never excpected to get married. I always thought I would find my happiness by myself without anyone. Well I thought that until I got to know Tony. I wouldn't say it was love at first sight, I would say it was more interest at first sight. We both knew we wanted to get to know the other person. Everything happpened so fast. We moved in together October 2008, got pregnant April 2009, Engaged that July, Married next October and so on.  We kept saying we wanted to take things slow but we couldn't stand to be away from each other and still to this day I like to spend every moment I can with him.

He is so supportive of me. I am always coming up with crazy ideas or changing my mind about things and he just says to me its ok whatever I want. Every couple goes through hard times but we both make an effort to fix things right away. When its good it great. I can't see my life without him.

Marriage is hard. So my advice to anyone who is single and looking would be make sure the person you decide to marry is someone who is willing to work as hard as you are at the relationship and make sure they are worth the hard work. Some people think it should be easy or effortless but thats not true. Imagine your very best friend or even a family member that you love. Now imagine living with them the rest of your life. Would there not be things that annoyed you? Would you never argue? you would. I know I would.

I wouldn't change a thing in my life (except maybe a little more money and another bun in the oven)

Pumpkin Spice Latte Day!

In honor of the first day of Pumpkin Spice Lattes at Starbucks!!! ok, I love them, a lot of people love them, and some hate them. The thing is, when Starbucks brings out the PSL (yes, I'm abbreviating it like that) it means the beginning of Fall time. I love Fall for so many reasons, sweaters, pretty leaves, Halloween, soup, kids back in school (even though my kid isn't school age it means less brats in the stores during the day) ok I could go on forever on what I love about Fall but thats not what this post is about. Its about the PSL. As much as I would love to have the creamy spicy pumpkiny goodness everyday I simply cannot afford it, $5 a cup? eh. not thats its not worth it though. So I bring you a recipe you can make at home for a fraction of the price. I searched all over for the perfect one, some have too many ingredients, or didn't use real pumpkin and I like to keep things simple and yummy like this one from Frugal Dreamer:

Home made Pumpkin Spice Latte

Doesn't that look yummy?

Ok, now some of you may be thinking I am crazy, thats not untrue but trust me when I say I am not the only one crazy about the PSL! Starbucks posted a link on Twitter today to a youtube video about the PSL and this is so funny you have to see it here

Well that's all for now, I hope you all make a yummy warm drink, sit next to an open window and enjoy the Fall air.

Pink Stitches Swap

I did a swap that was hosted by Bonnie from Pink Stitches. This was so much fun because I got to know 2 awesome ladies. First Audrey who is a card designer here and also makes and sells beautiful hair bows and pillow case dresses. Then I also got to know Margaret from Chica es Artisitca.

And this is what I got:

Awesome right?! Please exuse the terrible photography, I had to use my cell phone camera.

And this is my baby girl wearing her pretty bow :)

I'm so excited that Bonnie is planning on doing more swaps in the future. This was fun.

I hope everyone is having a great 3 day weekend!
